Discovering Balls Mills: A Place with History

Balls Mills sits along a stream called Mill Creek. This creek flows southwest and eventually joins a larger one called Lycoming Creek.

How Balls Mills Got Its Name

The story of Balls Mills began in the 1790s with an English immigrant named John Ball. He built a saw mill there, which was a place to cut wood into lumber. After John Ball sadly drowned, his son, Bill Ball, took over. Bill decided to open a wool mill, where wool was processed into fabric. Because of the Ball family's mills, the area became known as Balls Mills. Interestingly, the apostrophe was left out of the name!
