Balsa de Ves is a small municipality located in Castile-La Mancha, Spain. It is part of the province of Cuenca and the Manchuela region. As of 2018, about 150 people live here.
The name "Balsa de Ves" comes from an older village called Villa de Ves. This village was given special rights by King Alfonso X the Wise. These rights allowed the people to work their own land. Before this, the land belonged to the Crown.
History of Balsa de Ves
Early Beginnings
The special rights given to Villa de Ves caused many people to move. They moved to the flat lands nearby. This is where you can find the current areas of Balsa de Ves. These areas include The Wall, El Viso, and The Cantoblanco. Other nearby towns, Casas de Ves and Villar de Ves, also grew.
Becoming a Separate Town
Over time, Casas de Ves became more important. By 1745, the main local government office moved there. This meant that Balsa de Ves and Villa de Ves became dependent on Casas de Ves.
However, things changed again. In 1820, Villa de Ves separated from Casas de Ves. They rejoined briefly in 1823. But by 1838, they separated for good.
Balsa de Ves officially became its own municipality in 1844. This year marks its birth as an independent town.
The Name "Ves"
There is an old legend about how the name "Ves" came to be. It is said to have come from a battle cry. Christian troops supposedly shouted "Ves!" as they advanced against Muslim forces. This story is a legend and has not been proven.
