Bancroft, Missouri facts for kids
Bancroft is a small, unincorporated community located in the northeastern part of Daviess County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. An unincorporated community means it's a group of homes or buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.
Bancroft is situated about 1.5 miles south-southeast of Gilman City, which is in southeastern Harrison County. It's a quiet area, typical of many small communities in rural Missouri.
History of Bancroft
The community of Bancroft was first planned and marked out in the year 1859. This process, called "laying out," means that people decided where streets and building lots would be, even before many people lived there.
A post office was opened in Bancroft in 1867. A post office was very important back then because it was the main way people sent and received letters and packages. It also often served as a central meeting place for the community. The Bancroft post office served the area for many years before it finally closed down in 1901.
