The Gaillardia coahuilensis, also known as the bandanna daisy, is a beautiful flowering plant. It belongs to the sunflower family. This plant grows naturally in parts of North America. You can find it in northwestern Mexico, specifically in the state of Coahuila. It also grows in the southwestern United States, mainly in western Texas.
About the Bandanna Daisy
The bandanna daisy is a type of plant called an annual herb. This means it lives for only one growing season. It grows up to 20 centimeters (about 8 inches) tall. Its leaves can be found at the bottom of the plant and also higher up on its stem.
Where Does It Grow?
This plant likes to grow in special kinds of soil. It prefers calcareous soil, which is soil that has a lot of calcium in it. This type of soil is often found in areas with limestone rocks.
What Does It Look Like?
Each bandanna daisy flower head sits on its own long stalk. These stalks can be up to 35 centimeters (about 14 inches) long. Each flower head is quite colorful. It has 5 to 10 "ray flowers" around the edge. These are the petal-like parts you see. They are usually two colors: red, yellow, or orange near the center, and orange or yellow further out.
In the middle of these ray flowers, there are many tiny "disc flowers." There can be anywhere from 40 to 100 of these small flowers. They are typically yellow or reddish. Together, all these flowers make the bandanna daisy a vibrant and eye-catching plant.
