Banderilla is a town and a municipality in the Mexican state of Veracruz. It's about 9 kilometers (about 5.6 miles) away from Xalapa, which is the capital city of Veracruz. The municipality covers an area of about 19.8 square kilometers (7.6 square miles). Banderilla is located at 19°35′N 96°56′W / 19.583°N 96.933°W.

What's in a Name? The Story of Banderilla
The name Banderilla comes from a fun old story. It's said that thieves used to put a small flag, called a banderilla, on top of a hill named La Martinica. This flag was a secret signal to their friends that valuable goods were being moved along the main road.

The municipality of Banderilla is surrounded by other areas. To the north and northeast, you'll find Jilotepec. To the east and south, it borders Xalapa. On its southeast and west sides, it touches Rafael Lucio.

Banderilla gets its water from smaller rivers that flow into the Sedeño River. The Sedeño River then joins the Actopan River.
