Bangaru Laxman (born March 17, 1939 – died March 1, 2014) was an important Indian politician. He was a member of two big groups: the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
He led the BJP as its President from 2000 to 2001. He also worked for the Indian government as a minister. From 1999 to 2000, he was the Minister of State for Railways.

Early Life and Education
Bangaru Laxman was born in Telangana, India. His family belonged to the Madiga caste, which is a Dalit community. His father was B. Narasimha and his mother was B. Shivamma.
He went to school in Hyderabad. He earned two degrees: a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB). His wife, Susheela Laxman Bangaru, also became a politician. She was elected to the Lok Sabha, which is a part of India's Parliament.
Bangaru Laxman had four children: one son and three daughters.
Political Journey
Bangaru Laxman started his political career when he was young. In 1953, at age 12, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). This group focuses on building character and serving the nation.
Later, in 1969, he became an active member of the Jan Sangh Party. This party later became the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He held many important roles within the BJP.
Key Roles in Politics
- He was the President of the BJP for the state of Andhra Pradesh from 1986 to 1988.
- He served as the national President of the BJP from 2000 to 2001. He was the first Dalit person to become the president of this major political party.
- From 1980 to 1985, he was a member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council. This is like a state-level parliament.
- He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1996. The Rajya Sabha is the upper house of India's Parliament. He represented the state of Gujarat from 1996 to 2002.
Government Service
Bangaru Laxman also worked in the Indian government.
- From October to November 1999, he was the Minister of State for Planning, Statistics, and Programme Implementation.
- From November 1999 to August 2000, he served as the Minister of State for Railways.
He was also involved in workers' rights. He led trade union activities, helping to improve conditions for working people.
Later Life and Passing
Bangaru Laxman faced some health challenges later in his life. He passed away on March 1, 2014. He died at Yashoda Hospital in Secunderabad, which is in Hyderabad. He had been suffering from a long illness and breathing problems.
