History of the Tea Board
Early Beginnings
The story of the Tea Board began before Bangladesh became an independent country. In 1951, the Pakistan Tea Board was created. This happened through a law called the Pakistan Tea Act.
An important leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was once the chairman of this board. He held this role in 1957. Later, in 1959, a new law called the Tea Ordinance replaced the old act.
Forming the Bangladesh Tea Board
After Bangladesh gained its independence, a new organization was needed. So, in 1977, the Bangladesh Tea Ordinance was passed. This law officially created the Bangladesh Tea Board.
At first, the board had three members. Later, in 1986, another change happened. The Tea (Amendment) Ordinance expanded the board to eleven members. This helped the board do more work.
Moving Headquarters and Recent Events
The main office of the Bangladesh Tea Board first started in Dhaka. But in 1984, the headquarters moved. It found a new home in Chattogram, which is a major port city.
The board continues to play a big role in the tea industry. In 2022, some employees of the board received a special award. This was the National Integrity Award. The board has also helped tea production in Bangladesh reach very high levels. In fact, tea production reached a 168-year high recently. This shows how important the BTB is for the country's tea industry.
