The Five Taka is a metal coin used in Bangladesh. This coin was first made in 1993. Today, the five taka coin is still used as money across Bangladesh.
History of Bangladeshi Money
Before 1971, when Bangladesh became independent, the money used was the Pakistani rupee. After Bangladesh won its independence, the country created its own money. The first Bangladeshi currency was released on March 4, 1972.
The new money was called taka. Later, the special symbol "৳" was chosen to represent the taka. The smallest amount of money was set as one taka. A smaller unit of money is called a Paisa. This means that ৳1 is equal to 100 paise. In 1973, coins worth 5 paisa, 10 paisa, 25 paisa, and 50 paisa also started being used.
Design of the Five Taka Coin
The five taka coin was first put into circulation on October 1, 1993.
On the front side of the coin (called the obverse), you can see a picture of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was a very important leader in Bangladesh's history.
On the back side of the coin (called the reverse), you will find the National Emblem of Bangladesh. This emblem shows a lotus flower floating in water. It is surrounded by two grains of rice. Above them are three jute leaves and four stars. The words "Bangladesh Bank" are also written there. The year the coin was made and its value are also shown on this side.
In 2016, the Government of Bangladesh officially declared the 5 taka coin as legal money.
