The Story of Bangladesh's Money
Before 1971, the money used in Bangladesh was the Pakistani Rupee. But after Bangladesh became an independent country in 1971, they needed their own money.
On March 4, 1972, Bangladesh introduced its very first currency. They named it the Taka. The symbol for the Taka is "৳". Just like how 100 cents make a dollar, 100 Paisa make one Taka (৳1 = 100 Paisa).
In 1973, Bangladesh started making several small coins. These included the 5 paisa, 10 paisa, 25 paisa, and 50 paisa coins.
When the Five Paisa Coin Was Made
The very first 5 paisa coins were made in 1973. After that, more 5 paisa coins were made in different years. These years include 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, and 1994.
What Makes the Five Paisa Coin Special?
Over the years, even though the 5 paisa coin stayed mostly the same, there were some small changes. These changes mainly involved its design and how it looked.
The 5 paisa coin is known for being made of Aluminium. This makes it a very light coin. Its unique shape, a square with rounded corners, also helps it stand out from other coins.
