Bank of San Fernando facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Bank of San Fernando (also known as Banco Español de San Fernando) was an important financial group in Spain. It was started in 1829 by Luis López Ballesteros, who was the Finance Minister at the time. This new bank took the place of an older one called the Bank of San Carlos.

The Bank of San Fernando took over the old bank's debts. It also got more money by changing a large government debt (77.4 million pesetas) into 10 million pesetas in cash. The idea was to create Spain's first public bank. This meant it could print Spanish money. Even though it was a "public" bank, most of it (two-thirds) was owned by private people or groups.

What Was the Bank of San Fernando?

The Bank of San Fernando was a special kind of bank. It was set up to help the Spanish government manage its money. It was meant to be a central bank, which is a bank that controls a country's money supply.

Why Was It Created?

Before the Bank of San Fernando, there was the Bank of San Carlos. That bank had some financial problems. So, in 1829, the government decided to close it and open a new, stronger bank. This new bank, the Bank of San Fernando, was designed to be more stable and help the country's economy.

How Did It Help Spain?

The bank played a big role in helping Spain's finances. It was especially important during a difficult time called the First Carlist War. This war happened during the rule of Queen Isabella II. The bank helped the government keep enough money flowing to pay for things and stay financially stable. It was like a helpful tool for the country's money problems.

How Did It Become the Bank of Spain?

The Bank of San Fernando did not stay the same forever. In 1849, it joined with another bank called the Bank of Isabella II. The Bank of Isabella II had been started in 1844.

A New Name for a Bigger Bank

After the two banks merged, they kept the name Bank of San Fernando for a few more years. But in 1856, the bank changed its name one last time. It became what we know today as the Bank of Spain. This new, larger bank continued to be the central bank for the country.
