The Bank of Xenia is a really old building in downtown Xenia, Ohio, United States. It used to be a bank! This building was finished in 1835. It was home to the very first bank in Greene County, which opened its doors on June 1, 1835.

For about 30 years, this building was a busy bank. It became a local branch of the State Bank of Ohio in 1846. Later, in 1863, its name changed to First National Bank. The bank moved to a new building in 1865. After that, it wasn't used as a bank anymore. A doctor named A.C. Messenger even lived and worked there.

Discovering the Bank of Xenia

The Bank of Xenia building has a very special look. It was built in the Greek Revival style. This means it looks a bit like ancient Greek temples. It sits on a strong stone base. The building has two floors.

A Look Inside the Bank's Design

The front of the bank faces Detroit Street in downtown Xenia. You'll notice its grand entrance porch right away. This porch has two large columns. These columns are in the Doric order, which is a simple and strong Greek style.

Above these columns, there's a small balcony on the second floor. It has a pretty wrought iron railing. The decorative band on the balcony's side has cool patterns. These patterns are called metopes and triglyphs. They switch back and forth, just like in classical Greek buildings.

A Historic Landmark Survives

In 1973, the Bank of Xenia was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historical buildings in the United States. It was recognized because of its amazing and historic architecture. It was the second place in Xenia to join this list.

The building also survived a huge event. A very powerful tornado hit Xenia the year after it was listed. Many buildings were destroyed, but the old bank stood strong! Today, a beauty salon called Byuti 73 is located in this historic building.
