Banksia densa var. parva is a special kind of plant. It is a variety of the Banksia densa plant. Think of a variety as a slightly different version of a main plant species. This plant grows only in the South West Botanical Province of Western Australia. This means it is endemic there, which means it naturally lives and grows only in that specific area and nowhere else in the world.
A Plant with a New Name
This plant wasn't always called Banksia densa var. parva. For a long time, it was known as Dryandra conferta var. parva.
Why the Name Changed
In 2007, two scientists named Austin Mast and Kevin Thiele made an important discovery. They found that all the plants in the Dryandra group were actually very similar to plants in the Banksia group. Because of this, they decided to combine, or "sink," all the Dryandra plants into the Banksia family.
The Naming Challenge
When they moved Dryandra conferta into the Banksia family, there was a problem. There was already a Banksia plant called Banksia conferta. Plants need unique names, so Mast and Thiele had to choose a new name for Dryandra conferta. They picked Banksia densa, and so its variety became Banksia densa var. parva. This change helped keep the plant names clear and organized for scientists around the world.
