They found that all the plants in the Dryandra group were actually very similar to plants in the Banksia group. Because of this, they decided to move all Dryandra plants into the Banksia family.
This meant that Dryandra ferruginea needed a new name because there was already a plant called Banksia ferruginea. So, Mast and Thiele chose the new name Banksia rufa for the species, and this subspecies became Banksia rufa subsp. rufa. This kind of name change helps scientists keep plant names clear and organized.
