The Banksia rufa subsp. tutanningensis is a special kind of plant. It is a subspecies of the Banksia rufa plant. Think of a subspecies as a unique group within a species. They are a bit different from other plants in the same species.
This plant used to have a different name. It was called Dryandra ferruginea subsp. tutanningensis. But in 2007, two scientists, Austin Mast and Kevin Thiele, changed its name. They decided that all plants in the Dryandra group should now be part of the Banksia family.
Because the name Banksia ferruginea was already being used for another plant, Mast and Thiele had to pick a new name for this subspecies. This is why its name changed to Banksia rufa subsp. tutanningensis.
Like other plants in the Banksia ser. Dryandra group, this subspecies grows only in one place. It is found in the South West Botanical Province of Western Australia. This area is known for its many unique plants.
