Discovering Banksia splendida subsp. macrocarpa
What's in a Name?
For many years, this plant was known by a different name: Dryandra speciosa subsp. macrocarpa`. But in 2007, two scientists, Austin Mast and Kevin Thiele, made an important discovery. They studied many plants and decided that all plants previously called Dryandra should actually be grouped with Banksia plants.
This change meant the plant needed a new name. Since there was already a plant called Banksia speciosa, they couldn't use that name again. So, they gave this plant the new name Banksia splendida. That's why it is now known as Banksia splendida subsp. macrocarpa. This new name helps show its close relationship to other Banksia plants.
Where Does It Grow?
Just like other plants that used to be called Dryandra, Banksia splendida subsp. macrocarpa is found only in one special area. It is endemic to the South West Botanical Province of Western Australia. This means it naturally grows nowhere else in the world!
