What's in a Name?
This plant has had a few name changes over the years! It used to be called Dryandra speciosa subsp. speciosa. This name was used until 2007.
The Big Change in 2007
In 2007, two scientists, Austin Mast and Kevin Thiele, did a lot of research on plants. They found that all the plants in the Dryandra group were actually very similar to plants in the Banksia group. Because of this, they decided to combine them. All Dryandra plants were then moved into the Banksia family.
Why a New Name?
When they moved Dryandra speciosa into the Banksia group, there was a small problem. The name Banksia speciosa was already being used for a different plant! So, Mast and Thiele had to pick a brand new name for D. speciosa. That's how it got its current name, Banksia splendida. This new name also applies to this specific subspecies.
Where Does It Grow?
Like other plants in the Banksia ser. Dryandra group, Banksia splendida subsp. splendida is endemic to a specific area. "Endemic" means it grows naturally only in that one place and nowhere else in the world.
The South West Botanical Province
This special plant is found only in the South West Botanical Province of Western Australia. This area is known for its amazing variety of plants and animals. It's a very important place for biodiversity, which means it has many different kinds of living things.
