What is Bankston?
Bankston is a quiet community in the state of Alabama. It's not a big city, but it's a place where people live and have a history. You can find Bankston along U.S. Route 43, which is a main road that connects different areas.
Bankston's Changing Names
The community of Bankston has had a few different names over the years! It's like a person changing their nickname.
From Byler to Bank's Tank
Originally, this area was known as Byler. This name came from a man named John Byler, who built the road that runs through the community.
Later, a water tank was built there by the railroad. This tank was used to refill steam trains. The community then became known as Bank's Tank. This new name was a way to honor one of the engineers who worked on the railroad.
Becoming Bankston and Bucksnort
Eventually, the name was shortened to Bankston, which is what it's called today.
Interestingly, the community was also known by another unique name: Bucksnort. For many years, from 1873 to 1894, the local post office even used the name Bucksnort. After 1894, the post office officially changed its name to Bankston, just like the community.
