Bankview: A Community in Drumheller

Bankview is a special place within the larger Town of Drumheller. It used to be known as a hamlet. A hamlet is a small settlement, even smaller than a village. Think of it as a tiny community with a few homes and maybe a business or two.

Where is Bankview Located?

This community sits in a scenic spot within the Red Deer River valley. If you're in Drumheller's main town, you can find Bankview just to the south. You'll cross Highway 9 (also called South Railway Avenue) to get there. It's a peaceful area surrounded by the unique landscapes of the badlands.

A Look at Bankview's Past

Bankview has an interesting history. Before 1964, it was its own small hamlet. It was part of a larger area known as the Municipal District of Badlands No. 7. This was a type of local government area.

In 1964, Bankview became a part of the Town of Drumheller. This process is called annexation, which means one area officially joins another. So, Bankview is now a neighborhood within Drumheller.

We can look at how many people lived in Bankview over time. In 1956, about 538 people called Bankview home. By 1961, this number had gone down to 327. However, when the nearby community of Newcastle was included with Bankview in population counts, the total for the area was 1,276 people in 1961. By 1966, this combined population had decreased to 960 people.
