The Baptist Institute for Christian Workers is a historic building in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is located at 1427 Snyder Avenue. This building has had many different uses over the years. Today, it helps military veterans. It is now known as Snyder House. It was also once called Crown Nursing Home.
A Building with a Long History
This special building was built between 1911 and 1929. Benjamin Rush Stevens was the architect who designed it. The building has a unique look. It combines late Gothic Revival and Jacobean style architecture. This style is sometimes called "Institutional Gothic."
From College to Care Home
The building was first home to the Baptist Institute. This was a junior college. Later, the college moved to Bryn Mawr. It then became known as Ellen Cushing Junior College.
In 1952, the United States Navy started using the building. A few years later, in 1958, it became a nursing home. It was first called Crown Nursing Home. Later, it was known as the Cambridge Retirement Community.
A Place for Veterans
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it is an important historical site. In 2013, the building was updated and made new again.
Today, the building is used by the Veterans' Administration. It is a special facility called Snyder House. It has 40 beds. It helps veterans who need support. This includes veterans who are recovering and finding new homes.
