Baptistgrange facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Baptistgrange is a historical site in County Tipperary, Ireland. It's near the village of Lisronagh. Long ago, it was a special farm called a "grange" that belonged to a group of monks. In old records, it was also known by other names like "Achadfada."

This farm provided food and other important supplies to the Augustinian monks at their monastery in Dublin. The monastery was named St John the Baptist. At Baptistgrange, there was also a church, and its ruins can still be seen today in the middle of a graveyard.

Near the grange, there was once a small village, which is now empty. There was also a castle to the west. Old records from the 1600s describe this castle as just "an old broken stump" with a damaged outer wall.

Later, during a big change in religion called the Reformation, many monasteries were closed down. Baptistgrange was then rented out. In 1541, it was described as a small castle with a hall, about 51 acres of land, and 12 small houses. It was rented to a countess from the Ormond family for a small fee.

The Old Church at Baptistgrange

The church at Baptistgrange is divided into two main parts: the nave and the chancel. The nave was where the people sat, and the chancel was closer to the altar.

This church had a very unusual feature: three arches that stretched right across the inside of the church, near the altar. Sadly, these arches have now fallen down. On both sides of where the altar used to be, there are small openings in the walls that let in light.

You can also see stone supports, called corbels, sticking out from the side walls towards the west. These supports were used to hold up wooden beams for a gallery inside the church.
