For a while, it was known as the "Catholic Mission." A post office called "Fewsville" was in the area before it reopened as "Assinins" in 1894.

Keweenaw Bay is an unincorporated community. It was once known as "Leffenire." In 1901, its post office changed its name to "Keweenaw Bay" after the large bay it sits on. "Keweenaw" is a Native American word that means "portage," which is a place where boats or goods are carried over land.
