Baramita is a community located in the Barima-Waini region of northern Guyana. It is about 20 miles west of Matthew's Ridge and sits at an elevation of 99 meters (328 feet).
This community is one of the largest Amerindian settlements in Guyana. The people who live here are mainly from the Kalina people group. The village council in Baramita also looks after 22 smaller villages nearby. Together, the total population of this indigenous area is about 3,500 people.
Getting There
For a long time, the easiest way to reach Baramita was by flying. However, a new road has now been built. This road connects Baramita with Matthew's Ridge, making it easier to travel by land.
What People Do
The main ways people earn a living in Baramita are through mining and subsistence farming. Subsistence farming means that people grow food mainly for themselves and their families, rather than to sell a lot of it.
Village Leadership
The community of Baramita is led by a person called a Toshao. In 2019, the Toshao was Sharmain Rambajue. The Toshao and the village council work together to make decisions for Baramita and the surrounding satellite villages.
