Baranof Warm Springs are a group of ten natural hot springs. They are found in a small town also called Baranof Warm Springs. This town is located near Sitka, Alaska. These springs get their heat from deep inside the Earth.
A Look Back in Time
The Tlingit people were the first to use these warm springs. They lived in a place called Angoon. Later, people from other parts of the world found the springs. This happened in the year 1891.
Where Are the Springs Located?
The Baranof Warm Springs are found in a beautiful area. They are on the north side of the Baranof River. This spot is about 500 feet (152 meters) from Baranof Lake. The water flows out from rocks and gravel. These rocks include quartz diorite.
What's in the Water?
The hot water from the springs comes out of the ground. It is very warm, about 124 degrees Fahrenheit (51 degrees Celsius). The water is known as a sodium carbonate type. It also has a lot of silica in it.
