Barataria is a small community in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). In 2020, about 1,057 people lived there. Barataria is part of the larger New Orleans metropolitan area.

Where Does the Name Barataria Come From?
The name "Barataria" comes from a nearby waterway. This waterway is called Bayou Barataria. The bayou was named after a make-believe island. This island was given to a character named Sancho Panza. He was a character in the famous Spanish book Don Quixote. The book was written by Miguel de Cervantes.

Barataria is located in the southern part of Jefferson Parish. It sits on the west side of Bayou Barataria. It is also just east of Lake Salvador. Across the bayou to the east are the towns of Jean Lafitte and Lafitte. Barataria is about 23 miles (37 km) south of the big city of New Orleans.
