Barbara Brooks Wallace (born December 3, 1922 – died November 27, 2018) was an American writer. She wrote many exciting books for children. Her stories often won special awards.
For example, her book Claudia (2001) won the NLAPW Children's Book Award. It also won the "Best of the Best" award from the International Youth Library. Her book Peppermints in the Parlor (1983) won the William Allen White Children's Book Award.

Her Early Life
Barbara Brooks Wallace was born in China on December 3, 1922. She spent her childhood there. She went to the Shanghai American School. Later, she moved to the United States for high school. Her family often traveled through San Francisco.
She went to college at the UCLA. She was part of a group called Alpha Phi there.
Her Writing Career
Barbara Brooks Wallace was famous for her mystery books. She won two Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America. She won for The Twin in the Tavern (1994) and Sparrows in the Scullery (1998). Two other books, Cousins in The Castle (1997) and Ghosts in the Gallery (2001), were also nominated for this award.
Many people compared her books to those by Lemony Snicket. Her stories were also like those by Joan Lowery Nixon and Beverly Cleary. The American Library Association praised her work highly.
Some of Wallace's book series were made into TV shows. Her Miss Switch series was shown on ABC Weekend Special. These shows were very popular. Her Hawkins books also became live-action films on ABC Weekend Special.
In 2011, her book Diary of a Little Devil became an eBook. More of her books were planned to be released this way. This included a new Miss Switch story called Miss Switch and the Vile Villains.

Barbara Brooks Wallace passed away on November 27, 2018. She was 95 years old. She died in Arlington, Virginia.
