The ABC Weekend Special was a fun TV show for kids. It aired every Saturday morning on ABC from 1977 to 1997. Each episode was 30 minutes long. The show featured many different kinds of stories. Some were live-action, with real actors. Others were animated cartoons.
This show was a bit like ABC Afterschool Special and The ABC Saturday Superstar Movie. But the ABC Weekend Special was mostly for younger kids. It often aired after ABC's Saturday morning cartoons. Its main goal was to get children excited about reading. Sometimes, older ABC Afterschool Special episodes for younger viewers were shown again as ABC Weekend Special episodes.

Meet the Hosts
Over the years, a few different hosts introduced the ABC Weekend Special. They helped make the show even more special!
Michael Young (1979–1981)
From 1979 to 1981, Michael Young was the host. He welcomed viewers for two seasons.
Willie Tyler and Lester (1981–1984)
After Michael, Willie Tyler and his puppet friend, Lester, took over. They would appear at the start of each show. They introduced the episode and often suggested the book it was based on.
Cap'n O. G. Readmore (1984–1989)
Later, a puppet named Cap'n O. G. Readmore became the host. He was often joined by Jon "Bowzer" Bauman or other famous guests. Cap'n O. G. even starred in five animated episodes of the show. He also appeared in short animated messages. These messages encouraged kids to "read more."
Cool Opening Videos
The ABC Weekend Special had three main opening videos. These videos played at the start of each episode. They all used ideas from books and stories.
1977–1990 |
The Pop-Up Book
This was the first and longest-running opening. It showed a stack of books on a library desk. A big book in the middle opened up like magic. Figures from stories would pop out! The words "Children's Novels for Television" and "Short Story Specials" appeared. The show's title then "blossomed" into view. |
1990–1994 |
Reading is Magic
This new opening used computer animation and real people. Kids in a neighborhood discovered the magic of reading. When they opened enchanted books, they became part of the story! They could be cowboys, undersea explorers, or even cave kids. Cap'n O. G. Readmore would invite viewers to join the adventure. |
1994–1997 |
Adventures in Reading
In the mid-1990s, the opening changed again. This one used CGI (computer graphics). It started in a library, zooming past books. The ABC logo popped out of a book. It grew arms and legs and jumped into another book. The logo then explored different worlds made of letters! It fought in a castle, swung through a jungle, and flew in space. It ended on the show's title. |
Ending Credits
The ending video changed over the years. In the 1970s and 1980s, a short version of the theme song played. A bookmark floated into view and landed in the Pop-Up Book. A message appeared: "Recommended by the National Education Association". This message was used until about 1983. |
