About Barbara George

Her Early Life and Music

Barbara Ann Smith was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. She grew up in the 9th ward of New Orleans. From a young age, she loved to sing. She started singing in a church choir.

A singer named Jessie Hill discovered Barbara's talent. He suggested her to a music producer, Harold Battiste. This meeting changed her life.

Her Big Hit Song

Barbara George's first song was called "I Know (You Don't Love Me No More)". She wrote this song herself. It was released in late 1961. The song became a huge success. It reached the top of the R&B music charts. It also climbed to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This meant it was one of the most popular songs in the country.

"I Know (You Don't Love Me No More)" was so popular that many other artists later recorded it. Some famous musicians who covered her song include Ike and Tina Turner and Bonnie Raitt.

Later Career and Legacy

Barbara George released her only album in 1961. It was also called I Know (You Don't Love Me No More). Most of the songs on this album were written by her. She released two more songs in 1962. These were "You Talk About Love" and "Send For Me (If You Need Some Lovin')". They also made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, they were not as big a hit as her first song.

She continued to record music for some years. By the early 1980s, Barbara mostly stopped working in the music business. Her later songs did not become as famous as "I Know". She also sang on an album called Victory Mixture in 1990.
