Barbara Kuit is a talented architect from the Netherlands. In 1998, she started her own company called Information Based Architecture (IBA) with her partner, Mark Hemel. They are famous for designing the Canton Tower in China. This tower is one of the tallest TV towers in the world! It was finished in 2010 and used to be known as the Guangzhou TV & Sightseeing Tower.

About Barbara Kuit

Barbara Kuit was born in Rotterdam, a city in the Netherlands. Before she started her own company, IBA, she worked for several years at a famous architecture firm called Zaha Hadid Architects. While working there, she helped design many important buildings. These included the MAXXI – National Museum of the 21st Century Arts in Rome, the Millennium Dome in London, and a Science Center in Wolfsburg. Before that, she also worked in London at Harper Mackay. There, she helped with projects by Philippe Starck, like the St Martin’s Lane Hotel and the Sanderson Hotel.

Barbara Kuit has also shared her knowledge by teaching architecture.

  • From 1999 to 2007, she was a visiting critic at the Architectural Association in London.
  • Between 1990 and 1992, she taught different workshops at the Technical University Delft.
  • In 2004 and 2005, she was a visiting critic at the Academie van Bouwkunst in Rotterdam.
  • Since 2006, she has been a visiting lecturer at TU Delft.
  • In 2010, she became a post-graduate course coordinator at the University of Maastricht-Dep Architecture.

  • Canton Tower (Guangzhou TV & Sightseeing Tower) (2004–Present): This is one of her biggest projects. She was the main architect for this huge tower in Guangzhou, China. The tower includes a conference center, shops, a cinema, many restaurants and cafes, and observation decks where people can enjoy amazing views.
  • Student Housing in Ghana (2005–Present): She was also the main architect for a student housing complex in El Mina, Ghana. This project included an internet café, a guesthouse, and living spaces for students.
  • BMW Event Centre in Munich (2001): She helped design this large science museum in Germany.
  • Wolfsburg Science Centre (2000-2002): Barbara was a design architect for this science museum in Germany.
  • Contemporary Arts Centre in Rome (1998-1999): She helped design this museum in Rome. It had spaces for exhibitions, shops, and restaurants.
  • Mind Zone in the Millennium Dome in London (1998-1999): She was a design architect for this exhibition pavilion in London. She also helped develop the content and worked with artists for this project.
  • The Sanderson Hotel, London (1996-1997): She worked on renovating this historic building in London, turning it into a fancy 5-star hotel.
