Barbara Marx Hubbard (born Barbara Marx; December 22, 1929 – April 10, 2019) was an American futurist, author, and public speaker. She is known for her ideas about "The Synergy Engine" and the "birthing" of humanity, which focused on how humans could evolve to create a better future.
Early Life and Education
Barbara Marx was the first of four children. Her father, Louis Marx, was a famous toy maker. She grew up in New York City and went to the Dalton School. During college, she studied in Paris at L'Ecole des Sciences Politiques and La Sorbonne. In 1951, she earned a degree in Political Science from Bryn Mawr College.
Career and Ideas
Barbara Marx Hubbard believed that humanity was ready for a big step forward. She thought that if we combined new scientific, social, and spiritual ideas, we could solve big problems around the world.
She wrote seven books about how society and our planet could evolve. She also helped create a big online event called "Birth 2012." Famous author Neale Donald Walsch wrote a book about her called The Mother of Invention. Deepak Chopra called her "the voice for conscious evolution."
Hubbard was a modern futurist, someone who thinks about and plans for the future. She spent her life asking how to make life easier and happier for everyone. She didn't like old ways of thinking. In the 1970s, she started speaking at conferences about her ideas. She wanted to share how today's world has the power to create a better society. She developed the idea of "birthing" humanity, meaning a new stage of human development.
In 1998, she published a successful book called “Conscious Evolution: Awakening the Power of Our Social Potential." This book shared her ideas about how to make a better society. It also focused on the power of the conscious mind. Hubbard even started her own organizations, like the Committee for the Future. She also created Women of Vision in Action and The Alliance for the Advancement of Conscious Evolution, along with several others. Hubbard helped start the modern futurism movement and worked to make sure her ideas would continue.
In 1984, she was nominated for Vice President of the United States by the Democratic Party. She was the first woman to be nominated for Vice President on the Democratic ticket. She also helped lead meetings between American and Soviet citizens. She introduced a new idea called "SYNCON" to help different groups work together. She also helped start the World Future Society and the Association for Global New Thought.
Personal Life and Passing
Barbara Marx Hubbard's daughter, Alexandra Morton, is a marine biologist. Her sister, Patricia Ellsberg, is married to Daniel Ellsberg, who was known for the Pentagon Papers.
Barbara Marx Hubbard became ill in April 2019. She passed away on April 10, 2019.
