Joining the War Effort

Barbara was born around 1925. Her father was from Denmark. When she was 18, during World War II, Barbara joined the WRNS. This was a special part of the British Navy for women.

She was sent to a very secret place called Bletchley Park. This estate was a top-secret center where brilliant minds worked to break enemy codes. Barbara was stationed at HMS Pembroke 5, which was located at Woburn Abbey.

Cracking Codes at Bletchley Park

At Bletchley Park, Barbara became one of the first people to operate amazing new machines. These machines were called Robinson and later Colossus. They were some of the very first computers ever built!

Barbara worked in a special section called the Newmanry, led by Max Newman. Her job was to use these computers to help decode secret messages from the enemy. This work was incredibly important. It helped the Allies understand enemy plans and win the war.

After the War

When the war in Europe ended on VE day (Victory in Europe Day), Barbara began training to help with the war against Japan. However, the war ended quickly when Japan surrendered. So, her training was cut short.

After leaving the WRNS, Barbara returned to her home in Edinburgh. There, she worked in her family's shipping business.

Later Life and Recognition

In 2009, Barbara Baker was living in the Scottish Borders. She gave an interview about her amazing experiences at Bletchley Park. For many years, the work done at Bletchley Park was kept secret. It was only later that people like Barbara received recognition for their vital contributions.

Barbara Baker passed away in May 2011, at the age of 85, after a short illness. She died in Galashiels, Scottish Borders. Her work as a codebreaker helped change the course of history.
