Barbara Ann Wilberforce (born Spooner; 1771 – 1847) was an important woman in British history. She was married to William Wilberforce, a famous MP (a person elected to represent people in government). William Wilberforce worked hard to end the slave trade in the United Kingdom.

Early Life of Barbara Ann Wilberforce

Barbara Ann Spooner was born in 1771. Her family lived in a place called Birches Green in Warwickshire, England. Her father, Isaac Spooner, was a banker in Birmingham.

In April 1797, Barbara met William Wilberforce in Bath. A friend of William's, Thomas Babington, had suggested they meet. Just over a month later, on May 30, 1797, Barbara and William were married. Their wedding took place at St Swithins Church in Walcot, Bath.

Later Years and Family Life

In 1800, Barbara became very ill with typhoid. After this, her health was never very strong. Despite this, she had six children, and all of them grew up to be adults.

  • Robert (born 1802)
  • Samuel (born 1805)
  • Henry (born 1807)

After her husband, William Wilberforce, passed away in 1833, Barbara spent her time with her sons, Robert and Samuel. She also visited her sister, Ann Neale, in Taplow, Buckinghamshire. Barbara Ann Wilberforce died on April 21, 1847. She was buried next to the church in East Farleigh, Kent. This was where her son Robert had worked as a vicar.

Barbara Ann Wilberforce was shown in the 2006 film Amazing Grace. This movie was about her husband's efforts to end the slave trade. In the film, actress Romola Garai played the role of Barbara Ann Wilberforce.
