Barbière Island is a tiny piece of land located in the cold, icy waters of Antarctica. It's part of a group of islands called the Wilhelm Archipelago. This small island is found near the southern tip of Petermann Island.

Discovering Barbière Island

This remote island was first mapped by explorers during the French Antarctic Expedition, 1908–10. This expedition was a journey to explore the Antarctic region between 1908 and 1910.

How Barbière Island Got Its Name

The island was named after a person who helped the expedition. His name was M. Barbière. He was one of the port engineers in Recife, Pernambuco, a city in Brazil. M. Barbière helped the French explorers in 1910, and the island was named in his honor.
