Story of Barbie in the Nutcracker
The movie begins with Barbie telling a story to her younger sister, Kelly. Kelly is worried about performing a ballet solo. She is afraid to go on stage.
Clara's Christmas Adventure
The story Barbie tells is about a girl named Clara. Clara lives with her strict grandfather, Drosselmeyer. She also lives with her younger brother, Tommy. On Christmas Eve, their Aunt Elizabeth visits them. Aunt Elizabeth gives Clara a special gift: a Nutcracker. She says the Nutcracker holds the heart of a prince.
Clara falls asleep near the Christmas tree. When she wakes up, something amazing happens. Her Nutcracker comes to life! He is fighting an army of mice. The evil Mouse King leads these mice. The Mouse King uses magic to shrink Clara. She becomes as small as he is. The Mouse King cannot defeat the Nutcracker and his friends. So, he temporarily leaves.
The Quest for the Sugarplum Princess
The Nutcracker explains that he needs to find the Sugarplum Princess. She is the only one who can break the Mouse King's magic. A wise owl from the grandfather clock helps them. The owl tells Clara that the Sugarplum Princess can also make her big again. The owl gives Clara a locket. This locket will send her home when she opens it.
Clara and the Nutcracker go through a mouse hole. They find themselves in a cold ice cave. Snow fairies help them escape the cave. They then enter Parthenia, which is the Nutcracker's home. They travel to a gingerbread village. There, they meet two children and a horse named Marzipan. The children tell them that Prince Eric, the rightful ruler, is missing.
The group barely escapes the Mouse King's army. Luckily, Major Mint and Captain Candy save them. They lead a small group of villagers who are hiding. Major Mint explains that Prince Eric was careless. Because of this, the former king made the Mouse a temporary ruler. This was until Eric learned to be responsible. Clara then realizes something important. The Nutcracker is actually the missing Prince Eric! The Mouse King wanted to be king forever. So, he turned Eric into a Nutcracker. Eric now hopes to fix things and prove himself.
Battles and Discoveries
Clara, the Nutcracker, Major Mint, and Captain Candy set off. Their goal is to find the Sugarplum Princess. While Mint and Candy get a boat ready, Clara and Nutcracker help. They free flower fairies trapped in a well by the Mouse King.
Suddenly, a rock giant attacks the group. The Mouse King sent it to stop them. But the snow fairies arrive and freeze the sea. Marzipan pulls a sled, allowing them to cross. The Nutcracker uses his sword to crack the ice. The rock giant falls into the sea.
The group reaches the Princess's island. But it is a trick! The Mouse King's bat helper, Pimm, captures the Nutcracker, Mint, and Candy. They are put in a cage. Clara is left behind. The flower fairies help Clara. They carry her to the Mouse King's castle. There, she frees her friends.
The Mouse King's Defeat
The Nutcracker fights the Mouse King. The Mouse King's own spell bounces back at him. He shrinks to the size of a real mouse and runs away. The Nutcracker is badly hurt. Clara kisses him. This breaks the spell, and he turns back into Prince Eric.
Because Clara broke the spell and saved her friends, she is revealed to be the Sugarplum Princess! Eric is crowned king. The couple, who have fallen in love, dance together. Everyone celebrates. The tiny Mouse King returns on Pimm's back. He grabs Clara's locket and opens it. But a snowball knocks him out of the sky. Clara disappears. She is magically sent back home.
Back Home and a Happy Ending
Clara wakes up where she fell asleep. The Nutcracker is gone. She runs to her grandfather. He says it was all her imagination. Just then, Aunt Elizabeth returns. She brings a young man with her. He is Eric! Aunt Elizabeth introduces him to Clara. Eric asks Clara to dance. A snow globe shows Prince Eric and the Sugarplum Princess dancing happily.
As Barbie finishes her story, Kelly understands something important. She learns not to give up. Finally, she and Barbie dance the ballet solo perfectly.
