Barbrook One is a stone circle on Ramsley Moor in the Peak District. It is an ancient site from the Bronze Age.

What is Barbrook One?

Barbrook One is a special type of stone circle. It has a low, circular bank of stones around it. This bank is about 3 metres wide.

Inside the circle, there is one tall standing stone. It is about 1 metre (3 feet) high. There are also 11 smaller stones. These stones are much shorter, from 5 to 25 centimetres (2 to 10 inches) tall. The circle itself is about 13 metres (43 feet) across inside.

Other Ancient Sites Nearby

Barbrook One is part of a larger area with many ancient stone piles. This area is called a "cairn field." A cairn is a pile of stones.

About 200 metres (650 feet) north of Barbrook One is another important site. It is called "Barbrook No. 2." This is a "ring cairn." A ring cairn is a circular bank of stones, like a low stone wall. Barbrook No. 2 is also about 13 metres (43 feet) across inside.

There are about 80 cairns on Ramsley Moor. Most of these stone piles are smaller than 6 metres (20 feet) wide. Many are thought to be "clearance cairns." These were piles of stones that ancient farmers cleared from their fields. Some of the bigger cairns might have been used as burial places long ago. These are called "funerary monuments."

The whole area is very important. It is known as a "Scheduled Ancient Monument." This means it is protected by law because it is a valuable part of history.

About 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) north of Barbrook One, you can find another stone circle. It is known as "Barbrook No. 3."
