Baring Cross, Arkansas facts for kids
Baring Cross was a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, in the United States. It was located across the Arkansas River from Little Rock. Today, Baring Cross is part of North Little Rock.
History of Baring Cross
Baring Cross got its name from the first bridge built over the Arkansas River in that area. This bridge opened in 1873. The town was a small community in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It was located west of what is now Pike Avenue in North Little Rock.
The town started because of the Cairo and Fulton Railroad Company. Early families like Josiah M. Giles and Emmanuel Boone lived in the area. They controlled land along the river. The Baring Cross bridge replaced an old ferry system, making travel much easier. Because of the bridge and nearby railroad facilities, Baring Cross grew. It became a home for many middle-class railroad workers.
The railroad facility is still used today by the Union Pacific system. It provides many jobs for people living nearby. Baring Cross officially became a town in 1896. The people elected Mord Roberts, a railroad mechanic, as their first mayor. They also elected five council members.
Under Mayor Roberts, the town grew. More houses were built, and two new areas were added in 1898 and 1903. Schools and churches were also built. Pike Avenue became the main street, with hotels, stores, and restaurants. Larger businesses, like Vestal Florist Company and Arkansas Industrial Company (which made tiles and bricks), also developed.
In 1903, Baring Cross became part of North Little Rock.
More recently, in 2010, money was provided to improve the area. This included building new homes and public works. Later projects added the Rockwater Marina and improved roads.
