Barn House is a special place on Martha's Vineyard, an island in Massachusetts. It was once a summer home for artists, writers, and thinkers. The property has one of the oldest houses in Chilmark, built around 1690, and a barn from the 1780s. In the 1920s, a group called the Chilmark Associates added more buildings to make it a perfect summer getaway. This place shows how Martha's Vineyard changed from a farming area to a popular vacation spot.

History of Barn House: From Farm to Retreat

Early Days: A Sheep Farm in Chilmark

People from England started settling on Martha's Vineyard in 1641. One of the first settlers in what is now Chilmark, Massachusetts was Nathan Skiffe. In 1686, he started a sheep farm that was about 50 acres big. Raising sheep was a very important business in Chilmark for a long time. Nathan Skiffe's family kept using the land for farming sheep into the early 1900s.

Around 1690, Skiffe built a house on the property. Some parts of the house, like the wooden beams, might have been used before in other buildings on the island. Besides the house, a large barn built in the 1780s is the only other old building still standing today.

The Chilmark Associates: A Summer Colony for Artists

In 1919, a woman named Gertrude King bought about 43 acres of the property, including the old house and barn. She bought it for a group of her friends. These friends were artists, writers, and activists who had new ideas. They formed a group called the Chilmark Associates.

They wanted to turn the property into a shared summer retreat where they could relax and work. They changed the old barn into a place for dining and meetings. They also built several small cabins for people to live in. In 1927, they officially named the property "Barn House."

Many interesting people were part of the Chilmark Associates or visited Barn House. Some famous guests included:

What Makes Barn House Special?

Barn House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. This means it's an important historical site. The property includes several old buildings and features that tell its story:

  • The original Barn House, built around 1690.
  • The large barn, built around 1786.
  • A shed, built around 1850.
  • Seven cabins, built between 1920 and 1959.

Other important parts of the property are:

  • Old stone walls, which might be from the 1700s.
  • A stone culvert (a tunnel for a stream) from the 1800s.

Some newer parts of the property, like a tennis court, a bath house, and a cabin built around 2001, are not considered part of the historical listing.
