Barnard is a small, unincorporated community located in Jackson Township, within Putnam County, in the state of Indiana, United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's managed as part of a larger area, such as a township or county.

The Story of Barnard

Barnard has an interesting past, even though it's a small community. Its history tells us how places get their names and how they grow over time.

How Barnard Got Its Name

Barnard wasn't always called Barnard! When it was first planned out in 1876, it was known as Fort Red. The name Barnard came later. The community was eventually named after a man named Calvin Barnard. He was the person who originally owned the land where the community was built.

The Post Office in Barnard

A very important part of any community in the past was its post office. This was where people sent and received letters and packages. A post office was first opened in Fort Red in 1876. When the community's name changed to Barnard in 1880, the post office name changed too. The Barnard post office served the local people for many years until it finally closed its doors in 1912.
