Barnard Hughes (born Bernard Aloysius Kiernan Hughes) was a famous American actor. He was born on July 16, 1915, and passed away on July 11, 2006. He acted in many TV shows, plays, and movies.
Barnard Hughes became well-known for his many different roles. He often played wise old men or friendly, sometimes confused, leaders. Many of his most famous roles came later in his life.
About Barnard Hughes's Life
Barnard Hughes was born in Bedford Hills, New York. His parents, Marcella and Owen Hughes, were immigrants from Ireland. He went to La Salle Academy and Manhattan College in New York City.
During World War II, Hughes served in the United States Army. He married actress Helen Stenborg on April 19, 1950. They were married for many years, until his death. They had two children, a son named Doug and a daughter named Laura. Doug Hughes later became a theater director. Barnard Hughes and his wife are buried in New York City.
Hughes once shared that he was inspired to act after seeing Dennis King perform on Broadway. He even changed the spelling of his first name from "Bernard" to "Barnard." He did this because someone told him it would help his acting career. Before becoming a full-time actor, he worked many different jobs. These included working on a dock and selling things at Macy's department store. A friend suggested he try out for a theater company in New York City. He joined them and acted for two years.
His Acting Career
Barnard Hughes had a very long and successful acting career. He performed in more than 400 plays! One of his most famous roles was in the play Da. He played the main character and won a special award called the Tony Award in 1978 for Best Actor. Later, in 1988, he played the same role in the movie version of Da.
He also appeared in many movies. Some of his well-known films include Midnight Cowboy (1969), Tron (1982), and The Lost Boys (1987). He was also in Doc Hollywood (1991) and the popular movie Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993). In 1998, he played an old man in The Odd Couple II.
On television, Hughes was in many popular shows. He appeared in Naked City and Dark Shadows. In 1973, he had a memorable role as a priest, Father John Majeski, on All in the Family. He won an Emmy Award for playing a judge on the show Lou Grant. He also played Dr. Robert Hartley's father in three episodes of The Bob Newhart Show.
Barnard Hughes was the main character in three different TV shows. In Doc, he played a doctor. In Mr. Merlin, he played the famous wizard Merlin, who was teaching a teenager about magic. He also starred in The Cavanaughs, where he played the family's wise father. He even sang the song "Danny Boy" in one episode of that show. He also did voice-overs for commercials, like for Kix cereal.
When He Passed Away
Barnard Hughes passed away peacefully on July 11, 2006. He was almost 91 years old.
