Barnens adventskalender (which means The Children's Advent Calendar) was a special radio show in Sweden. It was broadcast every morning from December 1st to December 24th in 1957. This show was very important because it was the very first "Christmas Calendar" series on Swedish radio. It started a tradition that continues even today!
What Was the Show About?
Each episode of Barnens adventskalender was only five minutes long. It featured a group of children who would sing a Christmas song or carol. They also chatted with the radio producer, Rolf Bergström, about their exciting plans for Christmas. The most fun part was when they described the picture behind each day's door on a special advent calendar.
How Kids Joined In
Children listening at home could be part of the fun too! They had their own small copies of the calendar pictures. These pictures were printed in a weekly radio magazine called Röster i Radio. Kids could cut out these pictures. Then, they would stick them onto a big outline of a Christmas tree. This Christmas tree was also printed in the magazine. It was a fun way to count down to Christmas with the radio show!
Where Did the Idea Come From?
The idea for this special radio calendar came from Rolf Bergström, the show's producer. He saw some Girl Guides selling their own advent calendars in a bookshop. This gave him the brilliant idea to create a radio version for all the children in Sweden.
