What Was the Barnet Constituency?
A "constituency" is like a voting district. People living in that area vote for one person to be their MP. The Barnet constituency was created in 1945 and lasted until 1974.
How Barnet Was Formed
Before 1945, some voting areas were very large. To make things fairer, a group called the Boundaries Commission was set up. They decided to split up big areas. This is how the new Barnet constituency was created for the 1945 election.
Barnet was formed from parts of the St Albans constituency. It included the towns of Barnet and East Barnet, plus the rural area of Elstree.
Changes Over Time
- In 1950, a part called Hatfield Rural District was added to Barnet.
- But by 1955, Hatfield was moved back to the Hertford constituency.
- In 1965, Barnet and East Barnet became part of Greater London. Elstree stayed in Hertfordshire. These changes didn't affect the voting area right away.
When Barnet Ended
The Barnet constituency was officially ended in February 1974. The areas that were part of Greater London became a new constituency called Chipping Barnet. The Elstree area became part of South Hertfordshire.
