Exploring Barnet Center's History
The town of Barnet was settled in the 1770s. A group of Scottish immigrants came here from Perth and Stirling. They chose this spot to build their new community.
The First Church and Town Life
The first Presbyterian church was built on a hill. It was near the Stevens River. This church became the main gathering spot for the town. It was where people met for church and important town events.
Building the first church started in 1787. It was finally finished in 1800. Later, a brick church replaced it. Sadly, that brick church burned down in 1849.
The Current Church and Other Buildings
The church you see today was built in 1849. It is designed in the Greek Revival style. This means it looks a bit like ancient Greek temples.
The town's cemetery was officially started in 1791. That same year, Reverend David Goodwillie's house was finished. This house is one of the oldest buildings still standing in Barnet. Around 1830, Reverend Thomas Goodwillie built the church's parsonage. A parsonage is a house for the church minister. In 1898, the church vestry was added. This is a room used for church meetings and activities.
Around 1915, a small wooden building was added. It is at the southern end of the cemetery. This building was used to store tools and equipment.
