Barney Burton was an important person in South Carolina history. He was a legislator, which means he helped make laws for the state. He served in the South Carolina House of Representatives. This is a group of elected people who represent different parts of the state.

Serving in Government
In 1868, Barney Burton was chosen for a special job. He became a delegate to the South Carolina Constitutional Convention. A "convention" is a big meeting. A "constitutional convention" is where people meet to write or change a state's main rules, called its constitution.
Later that same year, he represented Chester County in the South Carolina House of Representatives. He served alongside two other representatives from Chester County, Sancho Sanders and Barney Humphries.
