Barney Greengrass is a very old and famous restaurant and deli in New York City. It is also known as an "appetizing store." This means it sells foods that go well with bagels and bread, like smoked fish and cream cheese. The restaurant is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, at 541 Amsterdam Avenue. It first opened its doors in 1908.
Barney Greengrass is especially famous for its smoked fish. They are known for their sturgeon, which is a type of large fish. They also serve other tasty fish like Nova Scotia salmon and whitefish. Many people love to go there for brunch, which is a meal eaten in the late morning, combining breakfast and lunch.
This restaurant has won several important awards. In 2006, it received the James Beard Foundation Award for Excellence, which is a big honor in the food world. In 2013, a food guide called Zagat said it had some of the best food among delis in New York City. In 2021, the Financial Times newspaper even called it one of the "50 greatest food stores in the world."
History of Barney Greengrass
Barney Greengrass first opened way back in 1908. Its very first location was in a neighborhood called Harlem, at West 113th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue. After many years, the restaurant moved to its current spot in 1929. This new home is at 86th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
In 1938, the owner, Barney Greengrass, got a special nickname: "Sturgeon King." This name was given to him by a man named James J. Frawley, because of how good his sturgeon was. After Barney Greengrass passed away, his son, Marvin, who everyone called "Moe," and Moe's wife Shirley took over the restaurant. When Moe died in 2001, his son Gary Greengrass became the new manager, keeping the family business going.
Other Locations
In 1995, Barney Greengrass opened another location in Beverly Hills. This second spot was inside a department store called Barneys New York.
