What is a Baron Strathspey?
A "Baron" is a noble title, usually passed down through families. The title of Baron Strathspey has a long history. It has been created two different times.
First Baron Strathspey (1858)
The first time the title of Baron Strathspey was created was on August 14, 1858. It was given to John Ogilvy-Grant, 7th Earl of Seafield. He was already an Earl, which is another high noble rank. You can learn more about the Earls of Seafield on their own page.
This first creation of the Baron Strathspey title ended in 1884. This happened when John's son, who was the 8th Earl and 2nd Baron, passed away without a male heir to inherit it. When a title "becomes extinct," it means there's no one left to inherit it in the way the rules say.
Second Baron Strathspey (1884)
Just a few months after the first title ended, it was created again! This time, it was given to James Ogilvy-Grant, 9th Earl of Seafield. He was the uncle of the previous Baron. He also inherited another old family title called the Colquhoun baronetcy.
The titles of Baron Strathspey and the baronetcy stayed with the Earls of Seafield for a while. This continued until the 11th Earl passed away in 1915. The Earldom of Seafield could be passed on to female family members. So, the 11th Earl's daughter became the 12th Countess of Seafield.
However, the Baron Strathspey title and the baronetcy could only be passed on to male family members. So, these titles went to the 11th Earl's brother, who became the 4th Baron Strathspey.
His son, the 5th Baron, officially changed his family name to Grant of Grant in 1950. As of 2023, the current Baron is the 7th Baron. He is also known as the 34th Chief of Clan Grant.
