Baron of Cymmer-yn-Edeirnion facts for kids
The Baron of Cymmer-yn-Edeirnion is an old noble title from Wales. It belonged to the main male family members who came from King Owain Brogyntyn. He was the youngest son of Madog ap Maredudd, who was a King of Powys.
When Owain Brogyntyn died, he shared his lands equally among his three sons. His oldest son, Iorwerth, received lands around a place called Cymmer. This area was in the parish of Llangar and a region known as Edeirnion, which was part of Merionethshire.
Iorwerth's son, Gruffydd ab Iorwerth, fought against King Edward I when he invaded Wales. After King Edward I took control of Wales, Gruffydd made peace with the King. On July 22, 1284, King Edward I officially confirmed Gruffydd's lands. He was given these lands per baroniam, which meant he held them as a baron. This made him a baron in the English feudal system.
The first time this title was clearly used was by Gruffydd's grandson, Owain. In 1334, Owain was called to a meeting in Harlech as Owenus ap Davidus, Dominus de Kimmer. This means "Owain, Lord of Kimmer." Because of this, some people say the barony started with Owain. Others say it began with Gruffydd. In the 1400s, their main home was called Plas o Cymmer. It was later renamed Plas Uchaf. Later, the 10th Baron moved to a nearby large house called Gwerclas.
