Barons Court was a special area in London that had its own representative in the House of Commons. Think of the House of Commons as a big meeting place where elected people, called Members of Parliament (MPs), make laws for the whole country.

This area, or "constituency," existed from 1955 to 1974. It was represented by one MP, who was chosen by a voting system called "first-past-the-post." This means the candidate with the most votes wins, even if they don't get more than half of all votes.

What Was Barons Court?

Barons Court was a specific part of London that was set up as a voting area for Parliament. It was created in 1955 from pieces of three older voting areas: Hammersmith South, Fulham West, and Fulham East.

The area included parts of what were then called the Metropolitan Boroughs of Fulham and Hammersmith. These were like local government districts. Barons Court covered the northern part of Fulham (including areas like Barons Court itself, Margravine, and Lillie) and the southern part of Hammersmith (like Broadway, Brook Green, Grove, and Ravenscourt). So, it didn't cover the entire area of either of these boroughs.

In 1965, London's local government changed. The area of Barons Court became part of the new London Borough of Hammersmith. Even though the local government changed, the parliamentary boundaries stayed the same until 1974.

In 1974, the voting areas were redrawn again. The Barons Court constituency was split up and its parts became sections of two new constituencies: Fulham and Hammersmith North. This meant Barons Court stopped being a separate constituency.

Who Represented Barons Court?

The people who represented Barons Court in Parliament were called Members of Parliament (MPs). They were elected by the people living in the Barons Court area. Here are the MPs who served this constituency:

Election Member Party
1955 Thomas Williams Labour
1959 Compton Carr Conservative
1964 Ivor Richard Labour
1974 constituency abolished

During its time, Barons Court was represented by MPs from both the Labour Party and the Conservative Party. These are two of the main political parties in the United Kingdom.
