Discovering Barpa Langass

An Ancient Stone Tomb

Barpa Langass is a special type of ancient burial mound. It's called a chambered cairn. This means it's a pile of stones covering a burial chamber. The mound is quite large, about 72 feet (22 meters) wide. It stands about 18 feet (5.5 meters) tall. Its roof is made from three huge stone slabs. Two slabs form the main roof, with a third one on top.

The main entrance to Barpa Langass is on its east side. Even though parts of the structure have fallen over time, you can still go inside one of the chambers. A historian named Erskine Beveridge thought there might be two or even three chambers inside.

Digging Up the Past

Around 1911, Dr. Erskine Beveridge explored Barpa Langass. He dug inside and near the stone mound. During his work, he found some interesting things. He found evidence of people buried after being burned. He also discovered pieces of pottery, some with cool patterns. Other finds included wood ashes and burnt bones. He even found a flint arrowhead, a stone scraper, and a piece of talc with a hole in it. These items help us learn about the people who lived there long ago.
