Barranca is a special area, or "district," located in the Puntarenas canton. This canton is part of the Puntarenas province in the beautiful country of Costa Rica.

History of Barranca
Barranca became its own district on November 20, 1965. Before that, it was part of the larger Puntarenas district. This change was made official by a special law called Ley 3594.
Geography and Location
Barranca covers an area of about 36.07 square kilometers (about 14 square miles). It's also quite low to the ground, with an elevation of about 27 meters (89 feet) above sea level. This means it's close to the coast.
