A Look Back: Barrengarry's History

How Barrengarry Began

A very important event for the area happened in 1840. A large piece of land, about 2560 acres, was given to Henry Osborne. This was a big step in settling the region.

Later, in 1876, a new community was started. It was first called the Private Township of Osborne. Today, this area is known as Barrengarry in the north and Kangaroo Valley to the south.

Growing as a Community

Barrengarry grew up close to Kangaroo Valley. But because of the distance and how hard it was to travel back then (only by horses or bullocks!), Barrengarry became its own little town.

Between 1873 and 1874, the village got its own important services. It had a Post Office, a store, a school, and a church. These places helped the community grow and thrive.

Barrengarry Public School

The Barrengarry Public School first opened its doors in 1874. The school building was designed by a famous architect named John Horbury Hunt. His designs were well-known and respected.

The Butter Factory

In the early days, dairying (raising cows for milk and making milk products) was a main industry in the Shoalhaven area. In 1878, a new machine called the cream separator was invented. This machine made it easier to separate cream from milk.

This invention helped farmers work together. In August 1888, farmers in Barrengarry decided to build a butter factory. The factory was built about a mile north of the Kangaroo River. It started making butter in February 1889.
