Barrettsville is a small place in Dawson County, Georgia, United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes or businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county.
History of Barrettsville
Barrettsville is named after the Barrett family, who were early settlers in the area.
James Tarrance Barrett
James Tarrance Barrett was born in South Carolina in 1803. He was the second son of John and Milly Rebecca Chastain Barrett. James passed away on January 19, 1867, right here in Barrettsville, Georgia. He was buried at Concord Baptist Church, which is near Barrettsville.
How Barrettsville Started
During his lifetime, James Barrett bought a trading post in Dawson County. He bought it from Native Americans who lived there. He also got a large piece of land from the state of Georgia.
Later, James was joined by his older brother, Ruben N. Barrett. His half-brother, John R. Barrett (also known as Jack), also moved to the area. Because the Barrett family was so important to the area, this growing community became known as Barrettsville.
